I think it's incredible how powerful socially conscious advertisement is. Occasionally around public transit I'll see posters trying to get the homeless off the streets or LGBT suicide awareness. The big campaign I've noticed lately is to end gender discrimination and empower girls around the world ~ "Because I Am A Girl". Growing up in Toronto, Canada, I was blissfully unaware of gender issues. Some can only be so lucky let alone having their human rights abused.
That is why this week I'm making a donation to 'Plan International' ~ one of the oldest and largest children's development organisations in the world. They are independent, with no religious, political or governmental affiliations. Working in 48 developing countries across Africa, Asia and the Americas, their mission is to promote child rights and lift millions of children out of poverty. Plan International's aims is to achieve lasting improvements in the quality of life of deprived children in developing countries, through a process that unites people across cultures and adds meaning and value to their lives. This can be done by meeting their basic needs and to increase their ability to participate in and benefit from their societies. Their efforts focus on eight core areas: education, health, water and sanitation, violence protection, economic security and financial stability, emergency disaster relief, child participation, and sexual health.
I challenge anyone to do more.
