Do More Mondays - #131 - L'Arche Canada

Today wasn't my peppiest day.  I sprained my ankle while running on Saturday and being on my feet all day at work really diverted my attention.  It was draining to not be in a good mood.  But now that I am home and thinking how I could have been better today, I am reminded of people who live with far greater challenges.  I try not to pity people with mental or physical disadvantages; instead they are an inspiration for strength in the face of adversity.

I read this article the other day and it made me happy knowing that stereotyping a person does not define who they are, it defines who you are.  L'Arche builds on the idea of doing things “with” instead of “for” people with disabilities, because when people of differing abilities spend time with one another, they create a better world.

L'Arche is an international organization creating homes and day programs with people who have intellectual disabilities.  Those who assist them, live together and are equally responsible for the life of their home and community.  L'Arche also offers programs and publications for schools, professional development and the general public that: contribute to the public conversation about social values, promote mutuality in relationships across differences, and to teach attitudes and skills for creating networks of belonging.
I encourage you to read about founder Jean Vanier and his daily thoughts ~ so much insight and inspiration!

Everyone has something to offer.  I challenge anyone to do more.
