Hiya! As the first month of the year wraps up the winter weather here in Toronto (and many other cities) is in full swing. Be sure to dress appropriately and drive safely ~ but also to think about those who don't have the basic needs to survive such as shelter. It's difficult to consider the various outcomes that lead a person to homelessness. Often times we think about drugs, alcohol and poor financial decisions, but fleeing abuse, refugees, and emergency relief can also be reasons.
That is why this week I'm making a donation to 'Red Door Family Shelter' ~ a non-profit registered charity that provide safe and supportive emergency housing to individuals and families in need of refuge from domestic violence, and to those who find themselves without accommodation. Their main objective is to break the cycle of homelessness. The Red Door assists residents in their efforts to establish a stable life outside the shelter through education, counselling, community services and advocacy on their behalf. Some of the other services they privode include: cirisis counselling, legal and immigration assistance, on-site medical assistance and referrals, case management, and much more. I encourage everyone to read some of the situations the Red Door has helped families through.
It's okay to be selective and cautious when giving to the homeless, but please be considerate and understand that not everyone deserves to be in such a situation.
I challenge anyone to do more.
