Do More Mondays - #24 - "Renewable World"

Hiya!  Another week means another reason to challenge yourself to do more good in this world!  There's been a lot of talk about the rising fossil fuel prices and criticisms towards nuclear energy.  Alternative, renewable, and clean energy is becoming increasingly necessary.  Living in a developed country - a heavy consumer of energy - I tend to forget about the places where there isn't electricity to pump clean water, cook food, or to power a light bulb.  We can, however, take what we've experienced and immediately implement efficient energy resources to these parts of the world.

That is why this week I'm making a donation to 'Renewable World' ~ a UK based charity set up by individuals from the renewable industry in 2007 to act as the link between the European renewable energy sector and energy poor communities who are most vulnerable to climate change.  They work to improve the quality of life among communities in East and Southern Africa, Central America and the South Asia, by collaborating with local partners to install affordable, reliable, and renewable energy services.  Inorder to improve health, education and income generation opportunities, Renewable World tackles poverty through the provision of sustainable technology and research.

An example of one of their projects is the construction of a 15kW micro-hydro power station in the isolated Mozambiquan village of Ndiriri.  It directly provides for approximately 80 families.  The power has been used to replace dry batteries and candles, increase evening activities, improve health services (through, for example, vaccine refrigeration), and improved education facilities, as well as improving access to energy, such as providing power for grinding maize and reducing the need to travel long distances to charge batteries, as well as setting up small businesses.

I challenge anyone to do more.
