Do More Mondays - #47 - Anti-Slavery International

Hiya! I hope everyone is having a nice long weekend; it's Labour Day weekend in countries that partake in this holiday! :D It celebrates the economic and social achievements of workers ~ beginning with the labour union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest. But in a lot of countries work ethics and human rights are severely distorted. Slavery still exists - it takes the form of human trafficking, chattel slavery, bonded labour, early and forced marriages, forced labour, slavery by descent, and so forth. Regions heavily involved include Eastern Europe, Africa, Middle East, Asia and South America.

That is why this week I'm making a donation to 'Anti-Slavery International' ~ the world's oldest international human rights organization, and the only charity in the United Kingdom to work exclusively against slavery and related abuses. They work at local, national and international levels; lobbying governments of countries with slavery to act against it, international agencies to increase the priority of combating slavery, and aids research to find out the extent of slavery. A number of successful campaigns have produced real life changes, such as those to stop the abuse of rubber workers in the Belgian Congo, the use of child slaves - Mui Tsai - in Hong Kong, and against forced early marriage in Yemen. I highly encourage everyone to look through their website, read about their publich outreach, programme and advocacy work. Be inspired by their successes but know that there is still more you can do by supporting their campaigns.

I challenge anyone to do more.
