Do More Mondays - #50 - Muscular Dystrophy Canada

It's tragic when an innocent child dies from preventable circumstances ~ even more so when they take their own life. The recent news of a local disabled boy, Mitchell Wilson, committing suicided due to being buillied and mugged at only the age of eleven greatly disturbed me. Eleven years old. Think back at what you were doing at that age; I'd imagine very few of you had suicide thoughts. The fact that he had muscular dystrophy - a degenerative and incurable disease that causes chronic pain - makes a lot of what we went through unsubstantial to his. I can't imagine how much he must have been agonizing and how hurt his family is feeling now.

The underlining issue was bullying and there's a lot written about it, but I feel unsettled going into. Aside from raising its awareness, actions need to be taken. A victims strongest tool against bullies is their voice. If you or someone you know is being bullied tell somebody. There is absolutely no shame in preventing another target from falling victim.

As suggested in Mitchell's obituary, this week I'm making a donation to "Muscular Dystrophy Canada" ~a non-profilt organization committed to finding a cure for neuromuscular disorders through well funded research. Their dedicated volunteers and staff across the country rcontinually work to provide ongoing support and resources for those affected, by delivering a variety of programs. Five key areas of service are as follow: Education; Information; Advocacy; Support; and Equipment. There is a lot of information on their website and I encourage anyone to check it out.

I challenge anyone to do more.
