One of the main concerns for donors is to know how the money is being spent and what impact is it doing. Every dollar that is given gets portioned to a cause, paying the staff and facilities, funding advertisement, and so forth ~ what you're left with isn't always a lot despite good intentions. While other times, one dollar can be multiplied many times based on what it can purchase, at a fraction of retail value, which is then used as a donation. If I'm unfamiliar with a smaller organization that isn't in the Canadian Donor's Guide, I try to do as much research until I'm comfortable with helping them achieve their objectives. This week I'm a little hesitant because there haven't been any recent news of this charities activities, despite seeing their 2010 financial information and reading about a May 2011 fundraising event. But I am very passionate for their cause and so I'll give the benefit of the doubt.
This week I'm making a donation to "Companion Animal Wellness Foundation" ~ a registered not-for-profit charity, founded by members of the veterinary community, dedicated to providing financial aid to economically disadvantaged pet owners whose companion animals are in need of emergency or specialty veterinary care. They recognize that, more and more, our pets have become members of our families and for many people their companion animal is their only companion. Every day pet owners make the excruciating decision to euthanize their pets, or to have them live with chronic pain and injury, due entirely to their inability to access the funds required for the animal’s care. This preventable loss and suffering can be devastating to individuals and families alike. It is the mission of the CAWF to lessen or eliminate the financial burden of emergency and specialty veterinary care in order to help both vet owners and veterinary practitioners in caring for these beloved animals. By providing financial assistance to cover the costs of caring for sick and injured animals of financially disadvantaged pet owners the CAWF attempts to ensure that each and every animal in these circumstances receives the care they need.
