It's interesting because I met a fellow backpacker in Cambodia who did a lot of asking for the charity of hospitality.  He would go up to someone and simply ask if he could sling his hammock on their property for the night.

While my friends and I paid and shared a nasty hotel room, he was across the street chilling at a bakery playing with their kid, absorbing the culture and received BAGS of leftover goods!
