Hiya! Today is 'Martin Luther King Jr. Day' in the United States ~ here in Toronto it is the day after. I think it is important to acknowledge his accomplishments in nonviolent activism for civil rights in America and around the world. He allowed millions of people to reach potentials in life they otherwise wouldn't have had because of political and racial oppression. Among his many quotable lines is this one: "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'"
That is why this week I am making a donation to 'Human Rights Watch' ~ an international non-governmental organization that conducts research and advocacy on human rights. By focusing international attention where human rights are violated, they give voice to the oppressed and hold oppressors accountable for their crimes. Their rigorous, objective investigations and strategic, targeted advocacy build intense pressure for action and raise the cost of human rights abuse ~ they are known for their accurate fact-finding, impartial reporting, effective use of media, and targeted advocacy, often in partnership with local human rights groups. Human Rights Watch is dedicated to protecting the human rights of people around the world.by standing with victims and activists to prevent discrimination, to uphold political freedom, to protect people from inhumane conduct in wartime, and to bring offenders to justice. They challenge governments and those who hold power to end abusive practices and respect international human rights law.
(I was initially going to make a donation to 'Harmony Movement' ~ a non-profit organization that encourages Canadians of all racial, cultural and religious origins to embrace and promote harmony, diversity, as well as equality. But their donation page is screwy, so that saddens me a bit)
I challenge anyone to do more.
