To make up for missing last weeks 'Do More Mondays', I've taken on a few suggestions for where I should make my next charitable donations. Through Twitter I've picked three responses ~ thanks for your support!
The first is "Amnesty International" ~ an international non-governmental organisation whose stated mission is "to conduct research and generate action to prevent and end grave abuses of human rights, and to demand justice for those whose rights have been violated." There are six key areas which Amnesty deals with: women's, children's, minorities' and indigenous rights, ending torture, abolition of the death penalty, rights of refugee, rights of prisoners of conscience, and the protection of human dignity. Amnesty International has developed several techniques to publicise information and mobilise public opinion. The organisation considers as one of its strengths the publication of impartial and accurate reports. Reports are researched by: interviewing victims and officials, observing trials, working with local human rights activists, and monitoring the media. It aims to issue timely press releases and publishes information in newsletters and on web sites. It also sends official missions to countries to make courteous but insistent inquiries.
The second is "The Arthritis Society" ~ Canada’s principal arthritis health charity dedicated to funding and promoting arthritis education, research-based solutions and community-based support. They empower millions to live their lives to the fullest by combating the daily limitations of arthritis. In the last 60 years, The Society has invested more than $170 million towards arthritis research to develop better treatments and, ultimately, find a cure. There are over a hundred different types of arthritis but we normally associate it with aching joints in old people. But it's not, it's a serious disease that isn't taken seriously enough. It can affect everybody and it is unbelievably painful and has a huge psychological/emotional affect on your life. Funding for research is expensive, but try fathoming the cost of living with a disease. The Arthritis Society has a very informative website as well as a YouTube channel with stories of individuals living with this debilitating disease.
The third charity is one I've previously made a donation to in April ~ "Child's Play". I tend not to repeat where I've already given to for the sake of diversity, but this one was were you guys wanted and I'm happy for it! The organization is dedicated to improving the lives of children with toys and games in a network of over 70 hospitals worldwide ~ they can provide vital distractions from an otherwise generally unpleasant experience. In support of Child's Play is "Desert Bus for Hope", the internet’s oldest and most successful charity gaming marathon. Created in 2007 by internet sketch comedy group LoadingReadyRun, they've committed themselves to playing the game Desert Bus (the most boring video game ever created) for days on end to raise money. During the event, they livestream silent auctions, host interviews from game industry greats and geek culture celebrities, and are willing to sing, dance, and generally make fools of themselves for viewer donations.
I challenge anyone to do more.
